Creative Process

This space is dedicated to showcasing the inner workings of the development of our pieces and the processes that drive Fahrer. Here, we share the studies, research, methods, and reflections that directly impact the quality, creativity, and timelessness of the objects we deliver. Each article reveals a bit of the rigor, the obsession with detail, and the passion that transform ideas into original designer furniture.

    The quest for ideal ergonomics.

    Share:

Ergonomics goes far beyond immediate comfort. It involves the in-depth study of human anatomy, biomechanics, and postural patterns. We collaborated with physiotherapists and ergonomists to map the ideal pressure points and curvatures that promote healthy posture during hours of use.

The seat height of 45 cm was carefully calculated to accommodate the widest possible range of heights. The backrest angle—105 degrees—allows the spine to maintain its natural curvature, reducing muscle fatigue during prolonged work sessions or meals.

The armrests, when included in the version with arms, were positioned to support the elbows without raising the shoulders, avoiding tension in the trapezius muscle. We tested more than 30 different heights before defining the final configuration.

Weight distribution was also meticulously studied. The slightly concave seat distributes pressure evenly across the thighs, avoiding compression points that compromise blood circulation. Every detail contributes to a sitting experience that remains comfortable over time.

Challenging the curvature of the wood

    Share:

Steam bending is one of the oldest and most elegant techniques in furniture design. It consists of subjecting wood to steam at controlled temperatures, making the fibers temporarily malleable. This process requires millimeter precision and years of accumulated experience.

We developed specific steel molds to ensure that each curve is identical. The wood is heated in steam chambers to approximately 100°C for about an hour for every 2.5 cm of thickness. After this period, we have only a few minutes to mold it before it cools and loses its plasticity.

The biggest challenge lies in predicting springback—the phenomenon in which the wood tries to return to its original shape after being bent. Through exhaustive testing, we calculated the exact curvature needed in the molds to compensate for this springback, ensuring that each piece achieves the desired final shape.

The smooth curves of the backrest are not just aesthetic: they reflect years of ergonomic research to provide ideal lumbar support. Each angle was tested with prototypes and adjusted until we achieved the perfect balance between comfort and formal elegance.

    Objects that have a soul.

    Share:

What differentiates a piece of furniture with soul from a purely functional object? We believe it lies in the intention, the care, and the narrative that each piece carries. We don't mass-produce—each chair, each table, each bench is conceived as a unique work that will inhabit a space and accompany lives.

The choice of freijó wood as the main material was not accidental. After months of testing different certified Brazilian woods, we identified that freijó offers the ideal combination of structural resistance, malleability for steam bending, and long-term durability. But beyond the technical properties, there is something intangible: the texture, the grain, the way light interacts with the surface.

Each piece that leaves our workshop passes through the hands of artisans who deeply understand the material. They know the behavior of the wood, they know how to read its signs, they respect its limitations. This empirical knowledge, passed down through generations, cannot be codified in manuals—it is felt, lived, practiced.

Objects with soul withstand the test of time not only physically, but emotionally. They are pieces you don't discard when new trends emerge. They are silent companions that age along with you, acquiring patina, stories, memories.
